Manual search time depends on "whether the item was put back after last use and whether it was registered." Tag selection notes: tooling is mostly metal, and ordinary flexible labels suffer severe read-range attenuation when stuck on metal surfaces, so anti-metal tags are required (ceramic / FR4 substrate). Ceramic reads farther and suits larger molds, inspection gauges, and measuring tools; FR4 resists impact better and suits fixtures that take frequent knocks. 3. When it does not apply: check whether these scenarios are yours

RFID finder mode is not cost-effective in every tooling scenario, so the boundaries come first:

  • Consumables with unit value < CNY 50 and annual loss rate > 30%: items like screws and shims can be managed with a supplies SKU ledger — no RFID tagging. The cost of item-level tagging exceeds the management benefit.
  • Dense metal stacking with gaps < 10 cm: metal reflection compresses read range, and reads become unstable in dense stacking — run an on-site read-range test first, then decide tag count and placement.
  • High-temperature / strong-acid environments: the adhesive and substrate of ordinary anti-metal tags cannot withstand high temperature or strong-acid immersion and require special tag materials.   • The book baseline itself is a mess: if the gap between your existing ledger and physical items already exceeds 30%, do a thorough manual count to align the baseline before bringing in RFID. RFID prevents future losses — it does not recover ones already gone.
