Tag selection notes: tooling is mostly metal, and ordinary flexible labels suffer severe read-range decay on metal surfaces, so anti-metal tags are required. Ceramic substrate reads farther and suits larger molds, gauges, and measuring tools; FR4 is more impact-resistant and suits fixtures that get knocked around often. Actual read range depends on stacking and scan distance, so run an on-site test round with several tag types against the real racks before scaling up. Tags can be printed in batch with a TSC TTP-244 Pro thermal transfer printer.

When It Doesn't Fit

RFID find-the-item isn't cost-effective in every tooling scenario, so let's be clear about the boundaries:

  • Consumables with per-item value < CNY 50 and annual shrinkage > 30% (screws, washers): these go through the material SKU ledger instead of RFID; per-item tagging costs more than it saves in management effort.
  • Dense metal stacking with spacing < 10 cm: metal reflection compresses read range, so reads become unstable in dense stacking. Run an on-site read-range test first before deciding tag count and placement.
  • High-temperature / strong-acid environments: the adhesive and substrate of ordinary anti-metal tags can't withstand high-temperature or strong-acid immersion and need special tag materials. High-temperature / anti-metal tags are on the roadmap (🛣️ In exploration), so we don't yet recommend relying on them for production scheduling.
  • The ledger baseline itself is messy: if the discrepancy between your existing ledger and the physical items already exceeds 30%, do a thorough manual count to align the baseline first before deploying RFID. FAQ

Q: Doesn't RFID fail in metal environments?

A: Ordinary flexible labels fail on metal surfaces; you need anti-metal tags (ceramic / FR4 substrate). Exact read range and stability must be verified against the actual workshop environment.

Q: Can it integrate with our existing ERP system?

A: Yes. AssetaGuard uses a standard REST API plus offline CSV import/export to align the books with the ERP (Yonyou / Kingdee / in-house) without replacing the ERP.

Q: Can the system force the return of tooling that isn't returned?

A: The system can't "force" it, but overdue items automatically generate an unreturned alert with rule-based escalation to tooling administrators and shift leaders. The system records clearly who borrowed what, when, and what's still outstanding—the actual chasing action is still executed by the management process.

Q: Do small consumables like screws and washers need RFID tags too?

A: No. These are "materials" and only need SKU in/out quantity records in the system, sharing the same permissions, reports, and approvals as assets. Only assets that need per-item location tracking (tooling, molds, equipment) get RFID tags.
